Save the tooth, end the pain
Root canal treatment clears infection from inside a tooth, eases the pain and saves your natural tooth. Modern technology and good pain control make it a routine, comfortable procedure.

- Fast relief from severe toothache
- Stops the infection and lowers the risk of an abscess
- Keeps your natural tooth, so you can avoid an extraction
- Keeps your full chewing and biting
Root canal explained
Inside each tooth is soft pulp with nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria infect it, we remove the pulp, clean and disinfect the canals, then fill and seal them. This stops the infection and lets you keep your tooth.
It can help with
- Deep decay that has reached the nerve
- A tooth damaged by injury
- Cracked or loose fillings
- Severe toothache or a risk of abscess
- An old root canal that has become painful again
Which one is right for you?
Root canal treatment
Removes infected pulp to save the tooth and take away the pain.
Root canal retreatment
Re-cleans and re-seals a previously treated tooth that has become infected again.
Apicectomy
A minor surgical procedure to remove the infected tip of the root.
Step by step
- 1
Exam and X-ray
Your dentist confirms the infection with an X-ray, or a 3D scan if needed.
- 2
Clean the canals
Under local anaesthetic, the infected pulp is removed using a microscope for accuracy.
- 3
Fill and seal
The cleaned canals are filled and sealed to stop reinfection.
- 4
Restore the tooth
A filling, onlay or crown protects the tooth, depending on the damage.

Good to know
Is root canal treatment painful?
No. Your mouth is fully numbed first, and many people feel better as treatment goes on. Some tenderness for a few days is normal.
How many visits will I need?
Some teeth can be treated in one visit. Larger back teeth usually need two visits.
Do I need a crown afterwards?
Usually for back teeth. A treated tooth is weaker, so an onlay or crown helps stop it breaking.
Will my tooth look different?
It can sometimes darken. Internal whitening, a crown or a veneer can restore its colour.
Does it always work?
It works in over 95% of cases. If a tooth doesn't settle, retreatment or a small procedure called an apicectomy can usually still save it.
I have no pain. Do I still need it?
Yes, if an infection has been found. Root infections cannot reverse and will flare up later, so it is best treated soon.
