Fully asleep throughout your procedure at Dame Street Dental Hospital, with a Consultant Anaesthetist by your side the whole time.

Who is it for?
Severely anxious or phobic
If fear has kept you from the dentist for years, you can have full care without a single moment of fear.
Children & special needs
For young children or patients with autism or complex needs who can’t be treated awake.
Complex surgery
Full arch implants, multiple extractions or major rebuilds, done in one session.
You simply prefer it
Some people just feel better asleep. That’s a perfectly valid choice.

- Hospital-grade operating theatre, purpose-built and fully equipped.
- Advanced digital technology: 3D imaging, guided implant surgery and in-house 3D printing.
- The full range of treatment, from full arch implants to children’s dentistry. Not just extractions.

The anaesthesia fee qualifies for tax relief. On €2,500, that’s €500 back from Revenue.
How to claimAwake, but calm and drowsy
A combination of medicines helps you relax and blocks pain. You stay conscious but docile, and many people say it feels like waking from a refreshing nap.
- Moderate to severe dental anxiety, or nerves about one procedure
- Local anaesthetic doesn’t work well for you, or you have a low pain tolerance
- A strong or sensitive gag reflex
- Bad past experiences at the dentist
- Long or multi-step treatment you’d rather pass in comfort

Good to know
Is general anaesthesia safe?
Yes, when given by a qualified Consultant Medical Anaesthetist in a properly equipped facility. At Dame Street Dental Hospital you are monitored throughout by your consultant anaesthetist and a dedicated anaesthesia nurse.
Will I be asleep with IV sedation?
No. With conscious sedation you stay awake but drowsy, relaxed and dream-like. Time passes quickly and you may not remember much. With general anaesthesia you are fully asleep.
Will I feel pain?
Sedation calms you first, then your dentist numbs the area with local anaesthetic, so you don’t feel pain during treatment.
Do I need someone with me?
Yes. A responsible adult (over 18) must take you home by car or taxi and stay with you for 24 hours. Without one, treatment can’t go ahead that day.
Do I need to fast before general anaesthesia?
Yes. Nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours before. Plain still water is allowed up to 2 hours before.
Can I drive afterwards?
No. Don’t drive for at least 24 hours after sedation or general anaesthesia.
What if I have a complex medical history?
We regularly treat patients with controlled diabetes, high blood pressure, heart conditions and more, and liaise with your GP or specialist where needed. Always tell us about any changes to your health or medication.
