Invisalign & braces explained
Orthodontics moves teeth into a better position so they look and work their best. Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners. Braces use small metal or tooth-coloured brackets joined by a thin wire.
It can help with
- Crooked, crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Bite problems, such as protruding upper teeth or crossbites
- Teeth that moved back after earlier braces
- Adults who missed out on braces when younger
- Children from age 8 to 9, for an early check

Good to know
How long does Invisalign take?
Most cases take 1 to 1.5 years, and milder cases can be quicker. You move to a new aligner every 1 to 2 weeks.
Does straightening hurt?
Teeth can feel tender for 24 to 48 hours after a new aligner or a brace adjustment. Over-the-counter pain relief helps, and some people feel no pain at all.
Can I eat normally?
With Invisalign you take the aligners out to eat. With braces you should avoid hard and sticky foods, like toffee, nuts and chewing gum.
Can adults get braces?
Yes. You can get braces safely at any age, and many of our patients are adults.
When should my child be seen?
We recommend a first orthodontic check at 8 to 9 years old. Most children who need fixed braces get them between 11 and 14.
Will my teeth stay straight?
Teeth tend to move back after treatment. Wearing your retainer as advised is the best way to keep them straight.
