Dental surgery explained
Dental surgery covers procedures like wisdom tooth removal, extractions, bone grafts and minor gum surgery. We always look at every way to save your tooth first. When a tooth must come out, it is done under local anaesthetic so you feel no pain.
It can help with
- Painful or impacted wisdom teeth
- Badly broken or decayed teeth
- Cracked teeth that cannot be repaired
- Teeth loosened by severe gum disease
- Making space for braces

Surgical extraction
For complex or impacted teeth, using a small cut in the gum, in about 30 minutes.

Good to know
Does having a tooth out hurt?
No. You are fully numbed before we begin, so you only feel some pushing and pressure. Some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal.
How long is recovery?
Swelling or discomfort usually lasts 1 to 2 days after a routine extraction, and 3 to 5 days after a surgical one.
Do my wisdom teeth need to come out?
Not always. If they cause problems for nearby teeth, decay or infection, your dentist may recommend removal. They are easier to remove in your teens or early twenties.
Can I be sedated?
Yes. IV sedation keeps you calm and relaxed. You need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for 24 hours.
What can I eat afterwards?
Wait about 4 hours, until the numbness wears off. Then eat soft foods and chew on the other side for a few days.
Can I claim tax back?
Surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth counts as non-routine care, so you can claim 20% back from Revenue. Routine extractions do not qualify.
